LOUDON, N.H. (June 17, 2012) – Things got a little wild on the final day of the 89th annual Loudon Classic motorcycle weekend. “The Magic Mile” played host to the 5th annual Legislator’s Parade Lap, a parrot setting a world record on the shoulder of a motorcyclist and nine more races, including the popular U.S. Legends Car Series, to cap off what was an exciting three days of racing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Riders from the Loudon Road Racing Series, Side Car Racers Association, American Sportbike Racing Association and drivers from the Amzoil NELCAR Legends Tour battled in over 30 races on the speedway’s 1.6-mile road course, and it was Rick Doucette of Sandown, N.H., that impressed the most.
The Granite Stater was the first rider across the Granite Stripe in four different races over the three days, and was runner-up another three times, as his Classic résumé continues to build.
“This was a great weekend. I always enjoy coming up here and getting into as many races as I can,” said Doucette, who won today’s HW Supersport. “It’s such a fun event and I’m glad to have been a part of it.”
Also earning victories today were Douglas Fogg (Formula 50 Lights), Roger Ealy (Amateur MW Supersport), Scott Mullin (LW Superbike), Shane Narbonne (Unlimited Supersport), Brett Guyer (Thunderbike), Scott Greenwood (MW Supersport), and Peter Essaff and Adrienne Greenlaw (Sidecar Modern).
Prior to the races, legislators from New Hampshire took part in the 5th annual Legislator’s Parade Lap. Rep. Frank Saperto of Derry; Rep. John Reagan of Deerfield; Rep. Thomas Laware of Charlestown; Rep. Greg Hill of Northfield; Rep. Jon Richardson of Allenstown; Rep. James Webb of Derry; Rep. Paul Brown of Raymond; and Rep. Gary Hopper of Weare took three laps around road course behind a pace car and motorcyclist Myles Bratter (Dover, N.H.), owner of Rainbow the Macaw.
Following the parade lap, Rainbow and Bratter set a Guinness Book World Record. The record, for an untethered bird riding on a motorcyclist’s shoulder, was set at 78 mph and clocked by a local police officer with a radar gun.
On hand to witness the record-setting lap was Katie Mackay, who might have traveled the furthest to see the Classic. A native of New England, Mackay traveled 2,800 miles from her current residence in Cave Creek, Ariz. She attended the Penguin Road Racing School in 2011 and hopes to come back to the Classic next year as a participant in the rookie event.
